K1 De Ultimate is a Fuji icon and his music is popular among Fuji lovers in Nigeria and outside the nation.
Over the years, he has performed at various shows around the world and garnered a huge following as well as released many albums and won numerous awards.
We recently caught up with the legend and he shared his thoughts on a new album in the works, the present political administration and lots more.
What are you currently doing and what are plans like for the new album?
“2016 is a beautiful year and there are many great things planned out.
“There are a lot of other big plans and there is also an 11-track album coming up, hopefully in no time it will be out.”
What is the surprising part of this album people should look out for in this album?
“It is like a baby that is yet to be born, so why don’t you wait till the baby is born so you can see and make a proper judgment?
“Anyway the fact of it is we have a beautiful baby and we can’t wait to let the people feel it.”
What should we look forward to as the album drops?
“The album will be a great one. And as soon as it drops, we are planning a tour around the world as we always do.”
What are the biggest stages you have performed on?
“I have been on a lot of big stages around the world. I have been on the stage at the World Of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) and a lot more and we are still doing it.”
“Everywhere we go we are given good reception. And of course you know that to be featured at the WOMAD, for instance, your music must be of quality.”
People see you as a legend today but why is it that there have not been any collaborations with other African greats like Salif Keita for example?
“Well, nowhere in the world is it stated that there must be collaborations between one great artiste and another for people to decide if one is a legend.”
“Salif Keita is doing his own thing for the country where he comes from, Angelique Kidjo is doing her thing for her country and so is K1 De Ultimate.
“The truth of the matter is we are all blessed to make use of the terrain and to entertain the people. And that’s what we are doing.
“Me and my band, we make great music, we entertain our people especially those that know the value of music. Also, we feature at the world’s biggest music concerts and we are doing just fine. There is actually no need to feature anybody for anyone to be rated as a world class artiste.”
Olamide used your song, are any of these other young artistes reaching you for a collaboration? If they do, will you give them the audience?
“Of course I will. You see, from time past Lagbaja had sampled my music Show Colour and if anyone else comes to me today, I will give a go ahead for it. It is another way of showing support for them to do well. I have done collaborations in the past with Blacky.
“The one Olamide did, yea he had my go ahead. And very many of them still come around. That is music for you, the music family is one happy family.”
Given you fame and influence in the Nigerian society today, are there plans for you to get into politics at some point?
“Of course we have the influence and it is always great to use it for something positive. But I am not seeking elective position but I am a force to reckon with, no doubt about that.
“I would want to use my music to teach and educate, to soothe the nerves of the people. We are agents of change, we lend our voices to key issues happening within the country, and that’s what we are here to do. And that’s what I want to continue to do.”
What do you think of the current administration under President Buhari?
“To all Nigerians, I want to say we need to thank the almighty God for giving us the wherewithal to be able to elect the leaders we have at this point in time.
“President Muhammadu Buhari is a child of circumstance who came to sooth the nerves of the people and apply common sense where it is necessary. Honestly, the direction of the government has a lot to do with the affairs of the country.
“The way we have been governed in the last 16 years is not so well, and is not the way a naton should be governed. It’s no use lying, people know that. Even people that do not know, with the revelations coming up now explains everything.”
