Soyinka demands investigation into Artists' Village demolition

– The artists are enraged by the demolition of the Artists’ Village at the National Arts Theatre, Lagos
– Artists claim the demolition is a vendetta
– There has been calls for punishment of policeman that shot an artist during protests at the theatre

L-R: Poet Odia Ofeimum, Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka, filmmaker Mamood Alli- Balogun

Professor Wole Soyinka has called for a holistic investigation, compensation and punishment where appropriate over the demolition of the Artists’ Village located on the expanse of land of the National Arts Theatre Iganmu.

The Nobel laureate, who was visibly furious, asked for an enquiry into the demolition and shooting of an artist by armed policemen in the presence of the director general of the National Arts Theatre, Mallam Yusuf Kabiru Yar’dua.

The Artists Village was demolished on Saturday, January 23, allegedly on the orders of the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

The artists, carrying placards, protested the demolition and their eviction from the Artists’ Village without any prior notice.

Mr. Mohammed met with the artists at the National Theatre on the day of the demolition. The minister said, contrary to what the Mr. Yar’adua allegedly told the artists, he had ordered the demolition of slums and shanties around the National Theatre, not the artists’ workshops and village.

Mufu Onifade, one of the artists lucky to be at his studio at the time of the demolition, said as early as 6 a.m., when he approached the the director general to give them time to pack their artworks and properties, Mr. Yar’adua gave them just 15 minutes and they were unable to salvage much.

The artists believe the demolition is a vendetta on the part of the Mr. Yar’adua. They claimed, when the concession of the National Arts Theatre was moved, the professional body of the artists, National Council for Arts and Culture, had kicked against it vehemently, hence why Mr. Yar’adua picked on them instead of demolishing the shanties as ordered by the minister.

During the demolition, a sculptor, Smart Ovie, was allegedly shot by the divisional police officer of
Oyingbo Police Station. The artists said the same officer denied the victim a police report as required by hospitals before treating gunshot wounds.

Calming frayed nerves, Soyinka said it was ironic that those who should strengthen democracy were the ones who often deployed “military mentality” in handling civil cases.

He said: “‎To me, democracy means a humane approach to governance. Relate with other people as human beings and not as rodents, that you can do away with. At the moment I am not apportioning blames. I am addressing what happened on Saturday. This I hope will lead to enquiry as to who did what? Who gave the order?  ‎Who brought arms? The police, army? Who authorised the police? This time, we don’t want to hear about the usual order from above? We must get down to the nitty, gritty.”

Soyinka said though he was with the minister a few days to the demolition, he was never hinted of the demolition.

On the current beefs in the Nigerian entertainment industry, she said it is okay to put it out in the open if a celebrity has issues with any other individual and let everything be addressed, instead of bickering on the internet through social media.

Harrysong wows audience at Tecno own the stage episode 11

- The 11th episode of TECNO Own The Stage, which went on air on Sunday, January 24
–Harrysong thrilled the audience with a perfect performance with his hit song Raggae Blues

As the first karaoke show in Nigeria is being rounded up, top artists have shown their support on the show.

Falz the bad guy performed at episode 10 and now in 11, Harry Song wowed the appreciative audience with his hit single ‘Reggae-Blues.’

The show went on air on Sunday, January 24 with Vimbai Mutinhiri hosting solo in the absence of her co-host, Uti Nwachukwu.

With $25,000, a recording deal, and a brand new TECNO Phantom 5 smartphone up for grabs, Sunday’s episode also showcased what the four contestants left in the contest planned on doing with their prize money should they end up claiming first place at February 7’s Grand Finale.

Nandy said she had no idea yet what she would end up doing with what was “a lot of money” while Sikin said she would, amongst other things, get a microphone and a mixer to help with her blossoming music career.

Shaapera, on her part, said she would use the money to get into the studio and produce some of her songs.

And the Nigerian was the first of the four contestants to take to the stage in Sunday’s episode with her a remarkable rendition of Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’.

Nandy was the next contestant to take to the stage with her rendition of Vanessa Mdee’s ‘Nobody’. And so good was the Tanzanian’s performance that Yemi couldn’t help saying that she liked the fact that Nandy was “fighting again.”

It was thereafter Pascal’s turn to take to the stage with a highly emotional rendition of Sam Smith’s ‘Stay with Me’ before Sikin took to the stage with her rendition of Zahara’s ‘Loliwe’.

But unlike in previous episodes, Sunday’s instalment of the show saw the judges giving a second chance at redemption to the two contestants they had adjudged to be the least impressive of the four.

Sikin and Pascal turned out to be the unlucky two and were asked to take to the stage one more time in the hope of proving to the judges that they were good enough to remain in contention for the grand prize.

And it seemed they both did enough to impress the judges as Yemi later announced that no one was going to be evicted from the show and that all four contestants would return for another shot at glory in next Sunday’s episode.

Lai Mohammed promises to compensate affected artists

-He assures artists of compensation
-He states in plain terms the directives he gave
-Artists calls for the removal of National Theatre general manager

On Saturday, January 23 at about 6:00 am, the General Manager of the National Theatre of Nigeria Kabiru Yusuf Yar Adua invaded the National Council for Arts and Culture Artists’ Village which houses arts studios, workshops, dance studios and some service contractors with a caterpillar from CCECC and two truckloads of armed policemen. Some of the demolished structures belonged to the NCAC whilst others built by artists had approval of the NCAC.

The minister for information and culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed addressed and reassured the resident artists of the NCAC Artists Village. He promised that the injured will get support for their treatment in hospital and that those who are legitimate residents will be duly compensated for damage done to their structures. He also confirmed that he asked Kabiru to demolish shanties at the back of the Artists’ Village along the canal that has been a route for miscreants and not Arts Studios and structures in the NCAC Artists’ Village.

Kabiru Yusuf Yar Adua leading armed policemen to demolish Artists’ Village

What the artists want from the minister:
  1. That the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture makes good on his promise regarding injuries to affected Residents and damages to property.
  2. That temporary accommodation be provided for artists whose structures have been demolished pending compensation and rebuilding of such structures. The offices of the National Film Corporation (NFC) and the Centre for Black Arts and Africa Civilization (CBAAC) at the National Theatre are vacant. We implore the Honourable Minister to use his good offices to relocate the displaced Artists and their materials and works to these offices.

3. That the Honourable Minister takes active steps to stop Kabiru Yusuf Yar Adua from further preventing the National Council for Arts and Culture from carrying out her statutory obligations to Artists and the Arts Community.

4. That the Honourable Minister should as a matter of urgency, remove Kabiru Yusuf Yar Adua from office as he has become an embarrassment to the current Administration. The Nigerian Culture Sector is already in deep crisis as a result of a lack of leadership and direction from the Public Sector. Kabiru must be prevented from further demonstrating vestiges of misrule which characterized the last Administration.

Artists believed Kabiru carried out the vindictive demolition without allowing the artists and business owners the opportunity to salvage artworks and belongings and as a result caused extensive damage to property and valuables.

Meanwhile, Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka had called for an inquiry into what exactly happened, compensation and punishment for erring individuals that has a hand in the Artists Village.

Fuji legend talks politics, new album and more

– Fuji legend K1 De Ultimate speaks on new album set to drop soon
– Career and tour plans for 2016
– Politics in Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration

K1 De Ulitimate and new publicist Esther Akinwande. Credit:

K1 De Ultimate is a Fuji icon and his music is popular among Fuji lovers in Nigeria and outside the nation.

Over the years, he has performed at various shows around the world and garnered a huge following as well as released many albums and won numerous awards.

We recently caught up with the legend and he shared his thoughts on a new album in the works, the present political administration and lots more.

What are you currently doing and what are plans like for the new album?

“2016 is a beautiful year and there are many great things planned out.

“There are a lot of other big plans and there is also an 11-track album coming up, hopefully in no time it will be out.”

What is the surprising part of this album people should look out for in this album?

“It is like a baby that is yet to be born, so why don’t you wait till the baby is born so you can see and make a proper judgment?

“Anyway the fact of it is we have a beautiful baby and we can’t wait to let the people feel it.”

What should we look forward to as the album drops?

“The album will be a great one. And as soon as it drops, we are planning a tour around the world as we always do.”

What are the biggest stages you have performed on?

“I have been on a lot of big stages around the world. I have been on the stage at the World Of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) and a lot more and we are still doing it.”

“Everywhere we go we are given good reception. And of course you know that to be featured at the WOMAD, for instance, your music must be of quality.”

People see you as a legend today but why is it that there have not been any collaborations with other African greats like Salif Keita for example?

“Well, nowhere in the world is it stated that there must be collaborations between one great artiste and another for people to decide if one is a legend.”

“Salif Keita is doing his own thing for the country where he comes from, Angelique Kidjo is doing her thing for her country and so is K1 De Ultimate.

“The truth of the matter is we are all blessed to make use of the terrain and to entertain the people. And that’s what we are doing.

“Me and my band, we make great music, we entertain our people especially those that know the value of music. Also, we feature at the world’s biggest music concerts and we are doing just fine. There is actually no need to feature anybody for anyone to be rated as a world class artiste.”

Olamide used your song, are any of these other young artistes reaching you for a collaboration? If they do, will you give them the audience?

“Of course I will. You see, from time past Lagbaja had sampled my music Show Colour and if anyone else comes to me today, I will give a go ahead for it. It is another way of showing support for them to do well. I have done collaborations in the past with Blacky.

“The one Olamide did, yea he had my go ahead. And very many of them still come around. That is music for you, the music family is one happy family.”

Given you fame and influence in the Nigerian society today, are there plans for you to get into politics at some point?

“Of course we have the influence and it is always great to use it for something positive. But I am not seeking elective position but I am a force to reckon with, no doubt about that.

“I would want to use my music to teach and educate, to soothe the nerves of the people. We are agents of change, we lend our voices to key issues happening within the country, and that’s what we are here to do. And that’s what I want to continue to do.”

What do you think of the current administration under President Buhari?

“To all Nigerians, I want to say we need to thank the almighty God for giving us the wherewithal to be able to elect the leaders we have at this point in time.

“President Muhammadu Buhari is a child of circumstance who came to sooth the nerves of the people and apply common sense where it is necessary. Honestly, the direction of the government has a lot to do with the affairs of the country.

“The way we have been governed in the last 16 years is not so well, and is not the way a naton should be governed. It’s no use lying, people know that. Even people that do not know, with the revelations coming up now explains everything.”
