Africa is one of the greatest continents anyone can find themselves on. The many things such as our beautiful culture, lovely people, amazing scenery and activities are what truly redefine us and make us who we are.
Never mind the wars in Congo and Ivory coast, nor the many people applying for a single job. We might all think we know so much about our continent but I bet the following facts will not only amaze but educate you.
Of course we all know that Africa is the second largest in the world in terms of mass and population and also the home of the first human species but I’m very sure you didn’t know that the continent has over one thousand languages spoken by its people. Africa also has the longest river in the world, the river Nile.
You see, three of the five fastest land animals in the world live in South Africa: The Cheetah, the Wildebeest, and the Lion. Also,the world’s biggest frog is found in Cameroon. Named the Goliath frog, their body can be one-foot long and weighs up to 8 IB. The Goliath frog can live up to 15 years.
Did you also know that, apart from Lesotho and Swaziland, Morocco is also one of the only three kingdoms left on the African continent and Libya is the only country in the world with only one color for its flag, with no insignias, design or other details? Well, don’t be surprised because there are about 250 ethnic groups speaking about 270 languages in Cameroon.
It is very interesting to know that apart from Muslim nations, Ghana has the lowest per capita consumption of beer in Africa, yet its brewery industry is one of the most competitive. You didn’t know this one!
We always want to think Africa is not too good a place to live because of healthcare systems but the world’s biggest hospital is in Soweto.
You probably didn’t know how a person from Botswana is called right? Yea. A person from Botswana is a Motswana and persons from Botswana are called Batswana. Don’t laugh because a person from Niger is also called a Nigerien.
Know that President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo is Africa’s longest serving Head of State.
He has ruled Equatorial Guinea since August 3, 1979, when he overthrew his uncle, Francisco Nguema. His son, Teodoro Nguema Obiang is his Vice president and is bound to succeed him if he resigns.
He is not alone. King Sobhuza II of Swaziland also took the longest time in reigning Swaziland. He reigned for a whopping 62 years. He was crowned in 1921 and died in August 1982 at the age of 83. He married 70 wives who gave him 210 children between 1920 and 1970.
