– Singer Omawumi talks about new collaboration with Angelique Kidjo
– When a new album is to be expected from her
– Her opinion on beefs in the Nigerian entertainment industry
The singer spoke to Pulse TV exclusively on her career and new album,
saying she already knew what to do on this album right from the last
album.
On the reception she has gotten so far since releasing her single
Play By Play which featured the award-winning Angelique Kidjo, she said
it has been good so far.
“It’s good. I can’t complain, considering the fact that it’s not mainstream.
“It’s good and I am getting good reviews.”
On working with the legendary singer, Angelique Kidjo, she said the
experience was comfortable especially because Kidjo has very Nigerian
features in her personality.
She also said the Beninese-born, Grammy-winning singer did not have
any airs all through the period they were working on the song.
She said: “She does not have any airs. She is playful, she is fun.
“She is very hygienic and likes nice comfortable surroundings.
Last time she came to Nigerian and I saw her, she was speaking Yoruba
fluently.
“And she is so good at what she does that she can just do it effortlessly.”
The Today Na Today singer said it was not difficult working with
Kidjo the moment she contacted her, adding that everything was made
possible by her manager and booking agent.
“It was a real honour working with her and at some point during the shoot, I started crying,” she said.
On her growth musically, she said she is more inspired to record and
perform live on stage these days even though it is more expensive.
In this light, she has promised to give her fans some live music on the new album which is set to drop soon.
She also promises a rebranded Omawumi on the new project.
On the current beefs in the Nigerian entertainment industry, she said
it is okay to put it out in the open if a celebrity has issues with any
other individual and let everything be addressed, instead of bickering
on the internet through social media.
Omawumi is a 33-year-old Nigerian singer who hit fame after her appearance in Idols West Africa, a music reality show.
She was the first runner up in the 2007 edition of the show but her
renown has more than trippled in the wake of the competition.
She has several hit songs and commercially-successful albums to her
credit and she is also an ambassador for a number of corporate brands.
